Starting out in the Marais, there are all kinds of local highlights that will make you feel you are in the City of Light with the characters.Lucy is a rookie reporter living in the city, and her friend Nina has come to stay. A possible scoop is soon hers for the taking it seems when an anonymous informant contacts her. By the Canal Saint-Martin, where she is to wait for further details, a man slips her a key and fob and disappears into the ether. But he has made it clear to her that they are watching. She returns to her flat, Nina has gone out and in the meantime the place has been trashed. The newspaper chief gives her the contact details of a PI, Alain, and together they find themselves evading the unwanted attentions of gangster Patrice Durand and his henchmen There aint nowhere in Paris where you can hide from Patrice. Ominous! They are clearly after something in her possession. Whilst Alains target is Patrice, Lucy is more concerned about the well-being of her friend; much to her consternation the police seem most disinterested in searching for her whereabouts, so she feels she must fall back on her own sleuthing instincts to track her down. This savvy Nancy Drew of the modern era is full of cunning plans, truly fearless and determined, she shies away seemingly from nothing and ploughs her way through hazards and frightening encounters.Twists and turns aplenty as Lucy rushes around Paris bringing together clues and constructing plans to track down Nina before its too late. And all set against a stunning Parisian backdrop. When people suggest books that are evocative of Paris, the name of author Cara Black often comes up, as she sets her mysteries, starring Aime Leduc, in the various arrondissements of the city. I think Lucy Hall, a sassy character created by Leigh Russell makes for an admirable alternative for enjoying this stunning city through fiction.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing thrillerBy K.B.This book was a bit of a disappointment for me. I was hoping it would be a decent thriller that would keep me somewhat entertained. But to be perfectly honest I struggled even to finish this one. This is the second book in the series and can be read as a standalone novel. Lucy Hall has just moved to Paris and is working as a reporter. After receiving a tip and a key from an informant things start going wrong in Lucy's world.I think my biggest problem with the story was I became so frustrated with Lucy. It's hard to read a thriller when you are constantly wondering why she is so naive and foolish. On a positive note, I did enjoy the setting of Paris for the novel. Having traveled there before, it was easy to picture many of the locations.Without spoiling the book, I will say the ending was unsatisfying to me. It just kind of ended on a strange note in my opinion. There were one or two questions that I would have like answered. That is my honest opinion after winning this book in a giveaway.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. TWO STARSBy Charles RobinsonI really tried and wanted to like this book but it was just a big disappointment for me and was so so hard to get through. The main protagonist Lucy was just to naive and stupid and all of the above and I found myself actually wanting her to be killed off and someone else becoming the main character. Though the story within itself and some of the other characters involved were entertaining I just felt short changed because of Lucy.
