Take a hot Navy SEAL, a socially awkward scientist, a personal mission and add in a bit of paranormal, and youve got a book that equals my favorite type of romance. This book has all that and more! Life Among the Pages If youre looking for a fast-paced, action-packed story laced with a bit of paranormal, then I recommend giving this a read. Harlequin Junkie, 4 StarsAbout the AuthorTrish McCallan was born in Oregon and raised in Washington State, where as a child she sold her first crayon-illustrated books for a nickel. This love of writing led her to study the craft at Western Washington University. She worked as a bookkeeper and a human-resource specialist before trading in her day job for a full-time writing career. Her debut novel, Forged in Fire, and its sequel, Forged in Ash, were both finalists for prestigious Romance Writers of America RITA Awards. Which Is The Best App To Read Books

One book in the series had a female narrator (though she did a very good job of differentiating the characterizations), but that is never as effective when the main POV is from the eyes of the men.I think the connection between these protagonists would have been better had Rawls's medical education been more clear from the start. Even in this particular book, it was unclear; at first mention, he was "not really a doctor" because he had not finished his internship. Then later, it was stated he had finished his third year of residency. All residents are actual "doctors"; they are pursuing a specialty at that point. Also, he says that he was 24 when his sister died, which would have been correct if he was still in his internship, but if he left after his third year of residency (as was later stated) he would have been at least 27 (perhaps a bit old to become a SEAL).Ms. McCallan's books are plot-dense, with many twists and turns, and well-written from the point of view of grammatical structure (something sadly lacking in SO MANY books these days). However, I am a little tired of so many issues with lack of trust between "brothers" and heart rendings from all. I would like to see a little more recognition and cooperation between the couples rather than so many manufactured conflicts. Can't the required conflicts be between the outside antagonists and the couples? Can the tension not be between the self-righteous woman and the over-protective man, but with how they work together to resolve the situational conflicts?I look forward to Forged in Embers, even though Amy Chastain has lost some ground with me due to her stubborn refusal to see reason regarding her children obviously being tagged for tracking, her confidence in her scumbag brother, and her lack of grieving for her husband, in spite of her supposedly ultra-cool professionalism. She put everyone at risk when her children were safe, just to have them with her. Bad for them, bad for everyone else. And why, when her husband, who had been forced to be useful to the evil people, but was then killed, were the bad guys still after her? Or her kids? They were all merely pawns to ensure her husband's cooperation, but once he was dead, why would they take such extreme measures to try to capture/kill them? Ginny and her son, who in the first book, are captured and held along with Amy, are never mentioned again, since her husband was offed at the end of his usefulness. Also, where's Jillian? She and Wolf were a big subplot in the last book, but all we see here is Wolf taking off with her in a helicopter, never to be seen again. Did he dump her in the ocean? Hide her away in the secret base--though she is not seen there? Again, couples working together, respecting each other, rather than manufactured conflicts, would be more romantic and satisfying to me.But still, I will buy the next installment, as soon as it has the narration available, because, you know, addicted to series books, and I take driving safety seriously.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. New Ruling Order vs Shadow MountainBy Susan"Forged in Smoke" has inspired negative comments as well as positive compliments; this is worrisome for someone trying to decide whether to buy a book! The overall rating is over 4 stars and there are many reasons for that. This series has a strong storyline; it is a complex tale of a Seal Team who find themselves wanted by law enforcement for all sorts of felonies. An evil, greedy group of men who fancy themselves rulers of the world, call their group "New Ruling Order". This group find out about a prototype of a machine that provides cheap, renewable energy, and decide that would be very bad for the planet! What?!The author, Trish McCallen, gives a short synopsis of the previous books with a list of the characters, which helps if this is the first book of the series that you are reading. I wouldn't say this book ends in a cliffhanger, but it's obvious this is a series with one major storyline. Each book has a different Seal finding love. This story is complex with lots of interesting characters; it is a good read!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
