From BooklistCusslers husband-and-wife globetrotting adventurers Sam and Remi Fargo return in this fifth novel in the series. Cowritten (like the previous installment, The Tombs, 2012) by acclaimed mystery novelist Thomas Perry, the book is a fast-paced story that revolves around a priceless artifacta Mayan codex, a book that could shed light on a vanished culture. Of courseand this will come as no surprise to Cusslers regular readersvarious people will stop at nothing to possess the artifact the Fargos have unearthed. Accusations of overreliance on formula are never entirely unwarranted with Cussler, but when the format and story are this much fun, readers wont mind. Sam and Remi are a likable pair of heroes, and the villains are appropriately villainous (but without taking that extra step into comic-book supervillainy). After the exciting ride that was The Tombs, this new book is a clear indication that the Fargo series, as long as Perry stays involved, will provide fine entertainment for adventure fans. --David Pitt "Engaging [a] thrilling climax.Publishers Weekly Fast-paced.Booklist About the AuthorCLIVE CUSSLER is the author of more than fifty previous books in five bestselling series, including Dirk Pitt, NUMA Files, Oregon Files, Isaac Bell, and Fargo. As usual, Sam and Remi, find themselves in the middle of a treasure so rare they go beyond all acceptable means to save the treasuries they find and help the local people keep the antiquities of their forefathers and preserve the Culture and properties of these last true Mayan peoples! What an adventure as the ruthless rich and evil heiress attempts to destroy properties, make fake claims of finding Mayan long lost treasured sites, looting and destroying priceless architectures taking all she can get for fame and fortune!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. DisappointingBy Aleksandor51I've read and enjoyed every book by Clive Cussler, including the ones he has co-authored. My favorite series is, of course, Dirk Pitt, followed closely by Isaac Bell, The Oregon Files, and The NUMA Files. The Fargo series is enjoyable, but on the whole I don't think is on the level of the others. A lot of that is the characters except for Sam just don't appeal to me all that much. Remi and the Fargo's assistant Selma come across as flat, with not much personality. But the plots and action in the previous books in this series made up for that for the most part.Unfortunately, that didn't really work in The Mayan Secrets. The villains were the real problem. The idea of a rich, spoiled heiress having murderous intentions did not feel plausible, especially when she felt she could control a Mexican drug lord to help her out. Plus her two henchmen were bungling fools who never felt dangerous.Things did pick up towards the end. Sam showed a side of him that was unexpected and refreshing. It did have a feeling of a Tom Clancy novel, and this continued until the end of the story. This isn't a bad book and does have its moments, but I just didn't find it as involving as Clive Cussler's other books.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Cussler and Perry work Fargo magic againBy Larry David WilsonClive Cussler is one of my favorite authors and has been for almost the entire period of time he has been publishing novels. At this point of his career, he has formed collaborations with other novelists, all of whom also have successful soloist careers. These collaborations produce novels in five series. Of the five, I think the Fargo Adventure series is my favorite, although it receives stiff competition from the Dirk Pitt series the elder Cussler now coauthors with his son, who is the namesake of Cusslers longest-running character. The entries in the Fargo series are now coauthored with Thomas Perry, so will be familiar to some readers in his own right, especially as the author of the clever Jane Whitfield series. The Fargos, Sam and Remi, are charming characters who have starred in five novels to date, The Mayan Secrets being the most recent. The locale in which the action is placed is one very familiar to me, involving the stretch from Pacific coastal Baja California to Guatemala. I have visited a number of the settings in this novel, so it has more resonance for me than some of the others in this series. Nonetheless, readers who have never traveled to Mesoamerica will find the story very interesting, I think, and I highly recommend to anyone familiar with Cusslers work. If the reader of this review happens to be one of the few people on the planet who have never read this author, you are in for a real treat. I suggest you use the opportunity to delve into the rest of this accomplished authors work.
