If her ratings don't go up, and the demographics don't get better, it's all over. So, while she, with her cameraman Lars, are getting ready to film the latest episode of her show in Prague, an episode with the historical monster, the Golem, she has to figure out a way to spice up this episode for the suits in the front office. Prague is a good place to do her researching, as this is the city that originated the legend of the golem, which is an artificial being that is made of clay, and which was created by the Rabbi Loew in the sixteenth century to protect that city's Jews. As Annja is in the process of doing her research, a vagrant is murdered in the alley outside her apartment building right under her apartment room. When daylight comes she finds that the death is just one in a series of bloody deaths that are plaguing Prague of late. As she investigates the deaths she manages to get into contact with Jan Turek, an investigative reporter who is investigating the transient's deaths by living amongst Prague's homeless. Then, while investigating this new mystery, long-time supporting character in this series, and self-centered immortal, Garin shows up to help, but after talking to him, Annja gets the idea that Garin knows more than he's letting on to. Then after going out with Garin and Lars, and after Garin and Lars decide to see who can out drink the other, she decides to go back to her apartment. On her way back she witnesses another attack and murder. As she pursues the killer, she has to track "him" across the roofs of the city, and while doing so she has an accident and the killer gets away. However, Garin is not the only immortal that will get involved in this adventure, as Annja started out as the protg of Roux, another immortal. Before the rooftop incident, Roux had contacted Annja and told her to stay put until he showed up as hes sure he knows who, or what, the killer is, and he's equally sure that Garin is involved. So, when Roux arrives, he tells Annja the tale of the origin of how he learned about the Golem, and how he initially learned about the Golem during one dark and stormy night (!) during a decadent party thrown by the Shellys, yes, that party, when during the party it is briefly terrorized by the Golem. Of course, this sighting is what the various members of the part use to write their to-be-famous horror stories. Using this sighting as an excuse to abandon this party, Roux and Garin will chase and track the monster across Europe. They, of course, catch it, but, that's not the end of the story as Roux now suspects that Garin is behind the Golems resurrection and its subsequent murder spree. As the story continues, the action picks up, Roux is almost killed, Annja is almost killed, there will be a grand showdown between Annja and the Golem, a secret will be revealed, and the reader even gets a mini-adventure at the end of the novel. "The Mortality Principle" by Steven Savile was to be the last adventure of Annja Creed, although the awful Mel Odom book ended up being the climatic ending novel instead. This is because Rupert Murdock bought out Harlequin, and as usual, he promised to change nothing while changing everything. In this case, by cancelling all of the Gold Eagle adventure books with any speculative elements. Too bad, as Annja deserved better, as she could easily be considered the literary granddaughter of Pat Savage. Oh yes, and one last thing, this novel easily sports one of the five best covers in the entire fifty-seven issue run of this pulp character. What a splash Tim Bradstreet's cover would have made as a coda for this series. But, it was not to be, but it still rocks. For this site I have read and reviewed these other Worldwide/Gold Eagle novels:Deathlands #119: Polestar Omega by James Axler. The Destroyer #141: Frightening Strikes by Warren Murphy Richard Ben Sapir (Tim Somheil). The Executioner #325: Edge Of Hell by Don Pendelton (Doug Wojtowicz). The Executioner #419: Sleeping Dragons by Don Pendleton (Michael A. Black).Mack Bolan #84: Dark Truth by Don Pendleton (Dan Schmidt).Rogue Angel #53: Bathed in Blood by Alex Archer (Joe Nassise).Rogue Angel #57: Mystic Warrior by Alex Archer (Mel Odom).Stony Man #52: Tactical Response by Don Pendleton (Dan Schmidt).and:The Sign of Glaaki by Steven Savile Steve Lockley.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Could have been a better story.By abknkI have enjoyed reading most Alex Archer Rogue Angel books knowing that they are written by different authors. This one has possibilities of being a good read. The characterizations were there, the setting was there, (with so many possibilites) and the "monster" was there. That was it. Annja was weak in this book..not her usual "kick-ass" self. The action didn't get started into wellllllll into the book making it hard to keep reading. It was a disappointment because it could have had so much MORE in the story.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
