His description of characters is internalized by the reader until the reader becomes part of the story. Action filled, the reader is also filled with deep remorse when Katrina, school teacher and betrothed to cowboy, Cal, is murdered by the Mexican bandit, Keno and his men. Tears flowed from the reader's eyes. Justice is served by Smoke and his wife, Sally, when Sally kills Keno while Smoke and his men slay the remaining bandits. The only part of the story that can be criticized is the use of Morse Code , using mirror signals by Smoke and his men. That took a stretch of the reader's imagination.
