Lenson is a Phoenix...By Long ShotStarting twenty-some years ago, I've read every Dan Lenson book, most of them twice and can honestly say I have experienced no better author anywhere. Poyer is the best I've seen at piling challenge upon problem upon trouble in such a subtly realistic way that there is no hint whatsoever of his novels being fiction, but instead they are the logs, the records, the very thoughts of the participants. And beyond that, when I "go to sea" with Lenson, whether he's an Ensign on the Reynolds Ryan or the Captain of the Savo Island, the descriptive talents of David Poyer are so real and compelling I feel every pitch and roll of the deck, every blast of arctic-cold or desert-hot air, and experience the total exhaustion of days without sleep right beside Dan Lenson..."The Cruiser" is just the latest in a long line of excellent literature by Mr. Poyer... I highly recommend it...Rich EdgarAtlanta0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One of the best in the "Dan Lenson" seriesBy Roger J. BuffingtonThis is an excellent Dan Lenson novel. In this one, Lenson, newly promoted to Captain, takes command of an Aegis-class cruiser. The ship is a problem ship, whose previous Captain (and much of the Wardroom) was relieved for cause. The Iraq War is imminent, and Lenson's ship has a key role in helping guard Israel against Iraqi ballistic missiles. Morale is terrible, there are technology and engineering problems, yes Captain Lenson has his work cut out for him. There are leadership problems, personnel issues, and a war to fight. This one has a lot to offer, moves at a brisk pace, and holds the reader's interest. Highly recommended. RJB.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent BookBy MichI found this to be one of the best books of the series. While the ending is setup for a follow-up book overall it was excellent. This book brings to light complex questions regarding the proliferation of WMD's and in the ending the issue of how an on scene commander may have to make a world changing decision in seconds. The complexities of command in todays's armed forces is examined from multiple perspectives. In this novel on a ship but the same holds for a Army or Marine battalion commander or a squadron commander in the Air Force. I would strongly recommend this book to readers who have followed Dan Lenson's career.
