From BooklistRollins latest Sigma Force thriller verges on science fiction. A satellite crashes in Mongolia, but before it does, it transmits what appears to be an image of Boston, New York City, and Washington, D.C., in ruins. The image, it turns out, is time-shifted from the very near future by about 90 hours (theres a rather laborious scientific explanation for how this could happen). As Painter Crowe, head of Sigma, tries to understand the situation, operative Gray Pierce learns of an ancient relic that seems to predict imminent disaster. In four days, the end of the world begins, and can even the highly skilled Sigma team stop something as big as that? As usual, theres a historical element to the storythis time involving Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, and Genghis legendary hidden treasurebut its the fast-paced action that carries us through to the end. Sure, the Sigma Force novels are formulaic (modern-day threat, ancient mystery, a team of experts who risk their lives to avert disaster at the last minute), but when the formula generates this much excitement, should we really mind? --David Pitt "Adventurous and enormously engrossing..." -- Alan Cheuse, NPR"Rollins's roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel's science, history and geography." -- New York Times"After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man." -- Huffington Post"If you're a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large. . . .All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi- dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker." --Mark Sullivan, New York Journal of Books"Rollins has done it again. Real history and science play a key role in all of the action, which never wanes...Definitely keep an eye out for this one." -- Library Journal (Starred )From the AuthorAbout James RollinsJAMES ROLLINS is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers that have been translated into more than forty languages. Rollins' rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that "After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man."NPR calls his work "adventurous and enormously engrossing..." and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: "If you're a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large....All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi-dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker."The Story Teller's StoryAs a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.Explosive Page-Turning AdventuresThe exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent jaunts include book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to give talks, seminars, and media interviews. In recent years, much of James' travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing "seminars." James' mentoring and coaching skills have made him a sought after writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country.James Rollins is the author of nine thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, The Devil Colony, Bloodline, and The Eye of God); six individual adventure thrillers; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx.) why books are important than internet The Eye of God (Sigma Force)

Bad physics, inane dialogue, cliched characters, an unbelievable story line filled with implausible situations all wrapped together with pseudo philosophy. Then I realized the author had accomplished his purpose, he had created the ultimate "pot boiler". It had taken me back to that old radio show "I Love A Mystery" and the fun of following the improbable exploits of Jack, Doc and Reggie. A fun read if you can suspend your logical side. A big bang for a buck ninety nine.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Tough to keep my eyes open for the Eye of GodBy G-WhizI've read a few of Mr. Rollins' books...for some reason, they just don't grab me. In this case, I both admire and dislike the detail he gets into. Some is interesting, but sometimes I get the feeling that he throws a lot of stuff into his books just to show readers how much research he's done. Often, laborious details detracts from the continuity of the story without doing much to further it. I admire anyone who puts this much effort in to a book, but at the same time I thought it was a continually tedious read without a lot of payoff at the end. I just never got engrossed in this as I have in other books by a lot of other authors. But then, he seems to be doing just fine without my readership and patronage.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. changing narratorsBy Patricia RobertsI have listened to the sigma force novels with Peter Jay Fernandez as the narrator. I identify the characters with the narrator's voice. When you change a narrator in the middle of a series it becomes hard to listen to. How would you feel that if every time you listened to your parents or a close friend speak their voices changed? When you have something good and it works well don't change it. The non-reader audience is growing. Set some standards and be consistent. The author says the he does not choose the narrator, the audio book company does. If that is true why does clive cussler have scott brick read ALL of his novels???? If you are unhappy with the audio version of THE EYE OF GOD return it and get your money back. maybe that will send a message to the recording company to be more consistent with the narrators. It is interesting to see that everyone who read the Eye Of God gives it a 5 star but those that listened to it gave a poor rating. I believe that in the future there will be many more people listening to books rather than reading them. tom
