Haass absorbing fourth thriller featuring the contract killer known as Columbus (after 2011sDark Men) tests the proposition expressed in the book that 'lies are popular and truth is the uninvited guest who spoils the party.' The well-constructed conclusion packs a powerful punch. - Publishers WeeklyColumbus charm and dark humor offer a refreshing break from the sociopathic-assassin mold, and Haas gutwrenching tale moves at breakneck speed. Pairs nicely with Jeff Lindsays Dexter series and Shane Kuhns The Interns Handbook. - BooklistA page turner. A spare thriller fueled by a sinewy plot. Propulsive plotting and compellingly written. - Boston GlobeHaas builds characters who are complicated, memorable, and sharply drawn. His spare, lean prose wastes no words. Haas develops a powerful and compelling voice and spends his scant 200 pages building suspense, creating atmosphere, and telling a compelling yarn. An unflinching little gem of a story: violent, dark, and unrelentingly entertaining. - Kirkus s (starred review)[Haas has] an intense prose style. From the very first lines we are pulled into a forceful emotional storm as Columbus reflects on his life, his calling, and the endless ambiguities of earning a living by ending the lives of others. Perhaps the best news is that Haas leaves Columbus' door wide open, so we can look forward to more adventures. - BookgasmA devastatingly cool series. - The New York Times Book A protagonist is only as strong as his opponent, and Columbus and Castillo are a formidable pair. Haas keeps the action flying while deftly juxtaposing Columbus's work with the realities of his home life. The duality makes him an accessible antihero. - Shelf AwarenessHaas doesnt know how to write a boring page. - David Benioff, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of CITY OF THIEVES, co-creator of GAME OF THRONES on HBOAbout the AuthorDerek Haas is the author of the novels The Silver Bear, Columbus, and Dark Men, which make up The Assassin Trilogy, as well as the novel A Different Lie,also featuring Columbus. Why 4 stars instead of 5? A couple of logical flaws. For one, Columbus teams up with another hitman who is completely careless, which is of course utterly antithetical to Columbus, which subsequently makes Columbus himself careless. So that's something of a break in character. There's also a scene (minor spoiler) where Columbus is bleeding from the face after pulling off a hit and 2 police officers come across him while responding to the sound of the gunshots and despite the fact that Columbus is bloody they don't bother to even detain him until it's too late. It's almost as if the author forgot that Columbus was bloody as he cool breezes past these cops. The other thing is that it's incredibly short. Took me about 2.5 hours to read. Which is fine but for ten bucks you'd like it to be a little longer than that. It's a good story though, which is the most important thing. The characters are engaging, the action is thrilling and the story never bogs down. It almost zips by a little too fast in spots. The climax in particular was really built up to be an epic adventure that you'd never forget but it ends about as soon as it gets started. Could've been a very delicious ending but the author left some meat on the bone for sure. All in all I definitely recommend it, and would more strongly recommend it if under 5 bucks.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
