Meticulously researched and well annotated, this adventure story contains accurate depictions and step-by-step procedures of the character's experiences. Whether the book is describing flying a Cessna, kicking steps to climb a snow field or applying first aid, Mr. Miller's narrative grounds the reader in the reality of the book and the skills of the character. The procedurals enhance rather than inhibit the story-line.The story intertwines two main threads that of a tentative young man facing his first solo mountain climb, and that of the pilot and passengers whose plane is lost. As the story plays out the young man faces many challenges including the fate of people in the missing plane. Overcoming his challenges and doubts the young man emerges stronger. The story also pays homage to the many professionals and volunteers who act as the search and rescue backbone in the North Cascades and who play an integral part in the story. In summary, an exciting (and educational) read. I look forward to Mr. Miller's next book.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Carry Carries the Reader TooBy sailorThe book hooked me from the start. I usually read leisurely but once I got started had a hard time putting book down. The author has several story lines going and shows the events from several perspectives. All viewpoints are believable. The author sells the main character Jim early on as someone you care about. He is not a superman but a struggling somewhat new climber. The parents of the toddlers and their angst is well developed. The technical details from all aspects - climbing, aviation, image processing are very accurate which goes to sell the story. Really helps enable the suspension of disbelief which is critical to all fiction.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
