The action is apace and the plot moves swiftly. As a stand-alone novel, this book more than holds its own. A great follow-up to the first two books in the seriesand highly recommended. Henry is sending John to Ireland and Palmer is meant to go and investigate whether one of the lords is a traitor to England, secret from John of course. John is not portrayed in anything approaching a positive light and thus makes a hash of it due to his own vanity. Theodosia of course refuses to be left out and also heads to Ireland. Quite the dramatic interpretation of a poorly documented trip. I never quite know what to make of the dramatic renderings in this series sometimes so biased sometimes equally biased in the other direction.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Blood, guts and tender loveBy Kirk TaylorThe "Fifth Knight" trilogy is a delightful look back to the times of Henry II. Delightful? Well, only if the reader delights in rough-and-tumble mayhem. I suggest reading the series in order. Though each book is a standalone, there is a theme that travels through all three books. Expect some gore mixed with tenderness, Good read, all three books.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It's In the DetailsBy Debra HarlanA well told story that takes you to medieval England and Ireland. It reminds you how complicated survival and success has always been. E. M. Powell is adept at giving the reader the power to taste and feel the time period. Also, the reader understands, there is no such thing as the "simpler" times!
