From Publishers WeeklyMcEwen, coauthor of SEAL Chief Chris Kyle's bestselling memoir, American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History, proves he also can write meaty thrillers with this intense debut. Inspired by actual Black Ops missions and stacked with a large cast of admirable and shady characters, the book opens with the terrifying kidnapping of Warrant Officer Sandra Brux by Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan. While captive, she is brutally beaten, raped, videotaped and held for a $25 million ransom. After a series of bungled rescue attempts, it's up to Master Chief Gil Shannon, who boldly defies orders from a confused and panicked U.S. president by leading SEAL Team Six and Delta Force fighters on an insanely dangerous mission to extract Brux from enemy hands. McEwen and Koloniar convincingly capture the friction between soldiers, intelligence officers, and politicians while making timely references to the National Security Agency and women in combat. Snappy dialogue and well-timed humor offset an abundance of acronyms and technical weapons references. The brutal torture scenes and gory combat descriptions require a strong stomach, but for an unfiltered portrayal of modern warfare backed by complex yet compelling storytelling, this one hits the target. ""Sniper Elite" is a gripping, fast paced adventure. Packed with action, it takes the reader into the shadow world of real military operations. B CrewsWhen a female US Army pilot is kidnapped by part of the terrorist menagerie in Afghanistan, the nation's political leadership is paralyzed. Into the void steps Navy SEAL Master Chief Gil Shannon and his cohorts who decide that blood is thicker than water. If you want a page turner that defies you to put it down this is your book. The action starts off fast then picks up speed. Though there are minor break downs in authenticity ('over and out' used in a non-ironic manner by a seasoned SOF operator) there are enough weapons and gadgets to keep even the most jaded military fiction reader interested while never forgetting the human element which is what makes the SOF what they are.The downside is that the plot, though plausible, is banal. The characters are cardboard cut outs. I loved the novel but I really never cared whether Shannon or any of his friends lived or died. The kidnapped officer is a mannequin, and though you want her rescued and the bad guys brought to justice you never really feel anything for her. If you are looking for insights on men in combat or the brotherhood of arms or what our counterinsurgency means, you aren't going to find it here. But if you want a rousing read for your commute or down time at home, I highly recommend it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. OMG what a great readBy 839clarkI was totally sucked into this book. I felt as though I was right there with these brave soldiers risking all to do the right thing, bring back one of their own. Politics be screwed. I read the forward. I get it that this book does not represent a real, specific action. I thank God every day there are brave men and women capable and willing to do the right thing, and leave no one behind. Goodness knows there are many who will not. Thank you for a great read, my accelerated heart beating likely cleared some arteries. Definitely will read more by McEwen and Koloniar.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Intense ACTION - - - Loved the EndingBy CoachDWow! Tons of blazing Navy SEALS action! What a thriller and I picked it up for only $1.99. I can see this as the first book in a series about Master Chief Gil Shannon. A true "badass" indeed. The story is about the rescue of a female Night-Stalker helicopter pilot. Once captured she is brutally raped and tortured, all on video. But the special ops people work together to effect a rescue from deep within enemy territory.Bottom line is that Chief Shannon is one tough son of a gun. The rescue itself is so exciting and INTENSE that you cannot find a place to stop reading or even pause. This thriller features: Special Ops, the CIA, politics, blazing guns, SEALS hopelessly outnumbered, wounded, and on the run for their lives.Chief Gil and a few other special operators fight to rescue the female pilot and survive. Lots of graphic action and death. This is not the A-Team, no spoilers but not everyone makes it home.Looking forward to more adventures with Gil Shannon.
