His forte has been legends that can not be proven, but the Ripper was a true historical figure (okay, lots of speculation as to who he really was) and this is not in the usual Event Group mold.I probably could have gotten into it, anyway, except for the off-putting characteristics of this volume. First, there are a LOT of typos, grammatical errors and weird punctuation - especially the non-use of commas where they are really needed to prevent misreads. I had to go back and re-read many sentences, because the punctuation was throwing me for a loop! Other sentences seem to have been proofread/edited by Yoda (okay if you are use to reading something like German). Second, it seemed to me almost as if the first half of the book was written by someone different from the writer of the last part. In the first part, there are glaring errors; the ones I noticed most were the firearms errors - there are .306 caliber rifles and there are 5.42 mm rifles mentioned numerous times [so it is not just a single typo] but both sizes are wrong - no such sizes are known - but there exists a .308 caliber round, which is the basis of the NATO 7.62x51 mm round, and there are 5.56 mm NATO rounds, an upgrade of the .223 Rem.). DLG should know this, and does - in the last part of this book and many other books. Third, since this story depends a lot on the contents of the Vaults, there is a lot of descriptions thereof, but doesn't offer even an attempt explain how such large objects get down to such depths and through the heavy vault doors???2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. RipperBy Vernon YoungAnother excellent novel by Golemon with a major plausible twist on the "Jack the Ripper" legend. This author rivals Clive Cussler. This novel is captivating and you find yourself in the thick of it with the protagonist, Jack Collins and the entire Event Group. Once you start reading the Golemon novels of the Event Group, you will find it difficult to put them down, except occasionally when you discover you must, to breathe -- his novels are that intense! It will be interesting to see what his next effort will be. Immensely entertaining, no doubt.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Saga ContinuesBy Old WomanI read Goleman's books because they're fun fiction. I like the characters and the action and the bad guys even when they're monsters and aliens. And even though I don't read Goleman for romance (or romance in general for that matter) I was thrilled Mendenhall finally got a girl. And I like that Goleman's characters age. Well, everyone except Lt. Ryan that is. And if he writes a book without Charles Ellenshaw Hindershot III, I'll be sorely disappointed. Crazy Charlie tries so hard and I was glad he got to be a hero in this book. I personally like the Henri character because Goleman is always showing that Henri isn't as bad as everyone thinks he is, including Henri himself.I have to take off a star for proof reading. It's far better than Goleman's early books, but he still has a way to go. I didn't catch the gun errors (no surprise there) or the Army rank error (which I should have). It surprises me when Goleman makes these types of errors because it's my understanding he has a military background.Others will tell you about the story line in detail. I'll just give you some high-lights. Sarah gets kidnapped twice. Ryan gets shot two or three times. Henri gets beat half to death trying to save Sarah, because he's fallen in love with her. Jack tries to rescue Sarah and would have failed if not for a crack team that just shows up. Jack resigns his commission. Jack gets badly beaten trying to protect Sarah. Coleman gets put in charge of security. Mendenhall becomes second in command and gets a girlfriend (who may not be in future books because she works for the CDC). Jack's mother (of all people) kills the bad guy that's going to kill Jack and Alice Hamilton. The bad guys kill the first monster and then become the second set of monsters. Jack goes back to the Event complex to save the day and doesn't (not really). He has Crazy Charlie help him, who does save the complex. Jack's sister Lynn gets killed by the bad guy's bosses (CIA), thus setting us up for a revenge book. What more could you want in a book?
