About the AuthorThirty years agoTom Clancywas a Maryland insurance broker with a passion for naval history. Years before, he had been an English major at Baltimores Loyola College and had always dreamed of writing a novel. His first effort,The Hunt for Red October, sold briskly as a result of rave reviews, then catapulted onto theNew York Timesbestseller list after President Reagan pronounced it the perfect yarn. From that day forward, Clancy established himself as an undisputed master at blending exceptional realism and authenticity, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense. He passed away in October 2013.David Michaels is the author of two novels in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series and several in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series.Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. Everybody getTeam Sergeant Nathan Vatz never finished his sentence. The Russian T-100 main battle tank on the opposite end of the intersection finished it for him.Vatz slammed onto his gut, sliding across the rain-slick pavement as the office building fifty meters ahead exploded with a thunderous boom.Shards of concrete, glass, and mangled metal arced into the cold night and fell in a hailstorm on the blackened remains of the HMMWVs and a pair of eight-wheeled Stryker infantry combat vehicles, behind which Vatzs special forces team had taken cover. A black rose of smoke backlit by fire bloomed across the intersection, driven by a wind thick with the stench of cordite. With a sudden lurch, the fifty-ton tank rumbled closer, its 152mm smoothbore main gun swiveling menacingly, tracks grinding over the bodies of the rifle squadthe tanks first victimswhod been hit as theyd dismounted from one of the Strykers.Vatz wiped sweat from his eyes, cleared his throat, and spoke into the tiny voice-activated boom mike at his lips: Victor Six, this is Vortex, over? His voice had cracked. Calm down. They just had to get the hell out of here. That was it.But now their exfiltration had gone to hell. No bird to swoop in, land on the rooftop helipad, and whisk them to safety. No nothing. And that tank wasnt operating alone. The rest of that platoon had to be nearby, with dismounted forces from the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles parked outside the gate.Victor Six, this is Vortex, over?Where was the rest of his twelve-man team? Theyd been right behind him, and the captain had been holding up in that doorway, which was now empty.Vatz bolted to his feet, darted back behind the still-burning hulk of a Mercedes SUV, and suddenly raised his pistol, about to fireWhen he realized the men down the alley were friendlies, his team, easy to mistake because of their Russian Spetsnaz uniforms.Weapons Sergeant Zack Murrow had already shouldered the Javelin antitank missile they had recovered from one of the dead infantrymen and was moving toward the street, about to lie prone and get a bead on that tank.Vatz rushed toward Zack; never breaking cover, he said in perfect Russian, Dont miss. The sergeant answered in English. Right. But forget the Russian, Nathan. Our covers been seriously blown.Vatz and his colleagues were Joint Strike Force soldiers wearing enemy uniforms. They would be considered spies. They would not be taken prisoner. There would be no diplomatic negotiation for their release.Hurrying farther along the wall, Vatz found the detachment commander, Captain Tom Gerard, and the assistant detachment commander, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Douglas Barnes, speaking softly, Gerard working an index finger over his pocket PC. Next to them were the teams two commo guys, and farther back were the two engineers and assistant weapons sergeant, Russian Varjag heavy pistols drawn as they covered the end of the alley. One of the two medics was positioned at the near side. how do you read a book on goodreads Tom Clancy's EndWar

Tom Clancy-style writing can't make up for a nonsense universe that the story is set inBy Kevin TeepleThis was the first quote "Tom Clancy" story I read, un-quote, which has the famous author's name on it, and shares elements of his style (which I can compare because after this I read Red Storm Rising) but he didn't actually write the story. This is, of course, a work of fiction based on a video game, and as such, there are two directions this can be reviewed as - as a standalone novel, or as a Tom Clancy novel. As a standalone novel, ignoring for the time being I actually did read a genuine Tom Clancy novel after this one and remembering how I felt when I read this one, the best way I can describe this book is "confusing, exciting nonsense." Allow me to explain a little. First of all, my main impression reading this story was that it had too many characters, all acting separately in their own little worlds, and the novel bunny-hops between them like an ADHD teenager like this is Call of Duty: World at War. As I was reading this, I'd read a chapter about how, for example, such-and-such army ranger was trying to defend this Canadian town. At the end of it, it would then jump to a completely different story about an interrogation, then a pilot rescue, then to a few other minor plotlines. Eventually, it would wind itself back to such-and-such army ranger, but by then I'd already forgotten pretty much everything about that sub-plot, even his name. It was exciting because each little subplot had plenty of action, with tension, violence, and internal conflict, such that it kept those pages turning. And it was nonsense because the world these people inhabited made no geopolitical sense. A few dozen assumptions in the story are absurdly taken for granted, not last of which in the future a. The Russian Federation descends into tyranny b. A war between Saudi Arabia and Iran makes Russia the world's largest oil supplier c. The Russian Federation goes on the warpath d. Canada stays neutral in a war between a dictatorship and the free world. At the very least the novel drops the absurd machinations from the video game that left the European Union and United States trying to murder each other, but for this, as I said, I'm just talking about the novel on its own. Long story short, this is a story set in the near future that only feels plausible in the most general of senses, and in specifics, it feels like the world was designed by a video game producer rather than anyone with geopolitical knowledge. As a Tom Clancy novel, with the foreknowledge to compare this to Red Storm Rising, I learned that loads and loads of characters is a Tom Clancy hallmark, for better or for worse. Also, like a Tom Clancy novel, it has plenty of action, and speculation about future technology. But taken as a Tom Clancy novel, the absence of a plausible world for it to be set in is that much more conspicuous. Red Storm Rising showed a plausible scenario of world events, and showed its work, such that one can nod and say "Yes, that makes sense. Things probably would go like that." In Tom Clancy's Endwar...not so much. What's happening in Europe while so-and-so army ranger defends a little Canadian town from marauding Russians? It could be a Zombie invasion for all we know, as the novel only tantalizingly refers to a "war" being waged, there, making the absence of details that much more head scratching. The end of the novel doesn't bring answers with it, just more questions, and sets up for an unnecessary sequel to the story, which I'd probably only buy if I found it super-cheap.So, if you like the Endwar game, great, go play it. If you like Tom Clancy stories, great, go buy one actually written by him. If you are looking for the plausible world building he's known for, you won't find it in this book. This is a book that can keep you entertained so long as you don't stop to think about it too much.P.S. Without spoiling anything, as it happens around the middle of the book (and there isn't much to spoil) it also has a scene where an innocent Canadian boy and his parents are brutally murdered. Now, Red Storm Rising has its own scene where an Icelandic girl's parents are murdered by Russians and she hurt and raped, and I'm not sure if the Canadian scene is supposed to be an allusion to that, but the way it's treated in the story left me more bothered because of the sheer senselessness of it. In Red Storm Rising, the rape scene serves to illustrate that the occupying Russian officers turn a blind eye to such behaviors, and such an act is a byproduct of a dictatorship that went to war because the cost of not going to war was too high. The corresponding murder scene in Endwar was just depressing and confusing, because it further highlighted the absence of any good reason why the Russian Federation went to war in this story, and in Endwar the scene seems to be what TV tropes would refer to as "Kick the Dog", a cruel and pointless action serves to darken a character, in this case the Russian Federation, and show them as card-carrying villains. Point being, the scene should have been left out, because while scenes depicting the unintended casualties of war can be poignant, in Endwar it was just confusing and depressing.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good read. All action!By Bob W. WilliamsFor those who like nothing but action, this book is fir you. Hopefully you can keep the different characters straight in your head because it moves from one scene to another a thousand miles, or a few hundred, away till it touches base with all the players and then segues into the next "hell is for heroes" action sequence. This is not Hollywood or television land where all the good guys miraculously survive but one where good guys and bad guys die equally as often, breaking hearts and driving characters forward with determination to win or die, and it happens both ways.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Quick, Fun, and Action-Packed, but Certainly Not Game-Changing (No Pun Intended)By MarkIt's a guilty pleasure book. It's not incredibly well written, or hugely engrossing. However; I really enjoyed it. The "alternate history (well, future)" portrayed in this novel, the U.S. is invaded, while the world is embroiled in WWIII, is pretty cool.Multiple-perspective narratives add a bit of depth to the plot, along with suspense as you wait to get back to your "favorite" character. There's really not much else to say. It's a fun, quick, action-packed read. I enjoyed myself. If you can get it for cheap, pick it up.Oh, and, it has literally nothing to do with the video game of the same name- well, I mean, I guess it does, but you don't need to have played it to understand it. In fact, reading this helps put the game into perspective!~Mark
