(Ebook pdf) The Bootlegger: An Isaac Bell Adventure

From BooklistIn the seventh Isaac Bell novel, it looks like Bells life is about to fall into chaos. His boss, Joseph Van Dornhead of the Van Dorn Detective Agency, a fictionalized version of the Pinkerton operationhas been shot and could die. There was a witness, but he is killed before Bell, one of Van Dorns key operatives, can interview him. Prohibition is the law of the land, but, thanks to corruption in the countrys police forces (not to mention in the Van Dorn agency itself), the criminal element is perhaps more powerful than ever before. Can Isaac find out whos responsible for nearly killing Van Dorn and bring down an organization that has nothing less than anarchy in America as its goal? As always in this series, the novel is very exciting, with excellent pacing and some very well drawn characters. With his combination of mental and physical prowess, Isaac Bell could easily become a sort of superhero (imagine a blending of Sherlock Holmes and Doc Savage), but the authors do a nice job of keeping him from crossing that line. Another fine entry in a strong series. Why include the comintern and Russian communists? I have already purchased the next one in the series. I hope it is better than this one0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Russian Communist or just another Bootlegger Bad Guy?By Christopher BergOne of the best Isaac Bell stories because of the great research on the Bootlegging business by Clive Cussler woven into the story.... I had no idea of the scale of smuggling by Bootleggers with their high speed boats running the gauntlet of Federal picket boats, or the fishermen risking their boats and lives by sneaking back into their harbors with a couple hundred cases of booze instead of fish. Great characters including my favorite Russian evil dude who was smart enough to fool everyone by pretending to be a penniless ex-Russian Count, and boyfriend to a rich, snotty American woman. Was he making millions off the bootlegging business to fund an American revolution overthrowing the government, or just stuffing his own pockets..... you won't know the answer till the final chapter.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
