From BooklistThe string of Ludlum books published long after his passing continues with the first book in a new series starring Paul Janson from The Janson Directive (2002). A former covert operative, Janson now freelances with his partner, Jessica Kincaid. A former colleague contacts Janson, asking him to rescue a doctor abducted abroad. The job is accomplished easily, but shortly after being rescued, the doctor flees. Janson and Kincaid are in a pickle unless they can find the doctor again and stop a plot involving a quest for oil. Unfortunately, there is no one they can trust. Garrison, primarily known for sea thrillers, seems an odd choice to write in the spy genre. The Ludlum brand relies on heavy action and treachery. Sadly, the action scenes are few here, resulting in a somewhat lackluster read. Still, the Ludlum name continues to draw readers, and a series starring Janson has a ton of potential. Give it a chance. --Jeff Ayers "Robert Ludlum (1927-2001) would have been proud of Garrison's fine thriller that picks up where his The Janson Directive (2002) left off...That Janson is a complicated character makes him more interesting than most action heroes, while Kinkaid proves a capable sidekick. Excellent sequel, and I'm looking forward to the next one.By Brendan BartholomewI gotta give Paul Garrison a lot of credit, 'cause he did a fine job of writing a sequel to another author's work. If "Janson" is to become a franchise, this franchise is in capable hands. Also, this book wasn't nearly as dark and disturbing as Ludlum's Janson story. The original Janson was quite the epic, but it took a lot out of me, because Ludlum seemed determined to confront the reader with lots of ugliness related to human evil. This time around, you get a compelling page-turner of an action/adventure novel, but less atrocities to work through. I liked that. Another thing: The first Janson book really strained the reader's willingness to suspect disbelief at times, because Janson and his adversaries were almost super-human in their capabilities. Garrison gives us a Janson more firmly rooted in plausibility, and I appreciate that.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fast-paced, extremely well written.... amazingly researched!By J. Douglas BrownOne of the most rewarding balances to find in covert thrillers is when the author manages to educate you with details and information you normally have no access to while a t the same time creating an exciting edge-of-seat unpredictable story! This book exposed the reader (me) to fasincating insight and information about how the governments, corporations, and politicians operate behind the curtain to obtain financial gains and amass positions of power with little or no regard for what the general public thinks is going on "in their behalf" as citizens. This is a blinding white light that shines on the corruption of nations and organizations. The characters were well developed and believable...fascinating ensemble of "good, bad, and ugly" persons all acting in their own manner for their own personal reasons. I enjoyed every moment of it and think you would as well.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Thrilling and captivatingBy Christopher PassmorePaul has done a great job of writing Janson's character in the style and ferocity that would make Robert proud. The story and descriptive narrative makes it easy to see in your mind the action as it plays out on the page. Keep up the good work!
