From Publishers WeeklyFans of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea will enjoy Golemon's recasting of the Jules Verne novel, his fourth Event Group thriller (after Ancients). A prologue set in 1802 at an isolated French prison evokes another well-known classic, The Count of Monte Cristo, then the action leaps forward by increments until it reaches the present day. The U.S. president calls in the Event Group after a mysterious undersea vessel, the Leviathan, begins terrorizing the seas, sinking ships and subs alike. Those aboard the Leviathan threaten nuclear destruction if the land dwellers don't stop their abuse of the ocean. A traitor enables the terrorists to infiltrate the Event Group's headquarters and take its leadership hostage. Once Event Group operatives manage to board the Leviathan, the plot echoes its inspiration even more closely. While Golemon adds his own closing twist, the story line's overall lack of originality makes this less interesting than the series' first and strongest entry, Event. (Aug.) Publishers Weekly on LegendGolemon can write action sequences with the best of them, and he lands a solid uppercut with this book. The depth of science fictionis surprising and ingenious. SFSignal.com on LegendThe Roswell Incident--whether legend, fact, or some combination of both--has inspired countless novels and movies over the years, but David Lynn Golemon's Event peels back the layers of Roswell with refreshing originality. The action is spectacularly cinematic, the characters compelling, and the story is a flat-out adrenaline rush that pits real-world, cutting-edge military technology against a literally out-of-this-world threat. Even better, the Event Group itself is one of the best fictional agencies to arise in the literature of government conspiracies. I liked the recurring theme throughout the book that mankind has a duty to be the caretaker of the earth and all of its resources. It also demonstrates how careless we are with our responsibilities. However, we must always be aware that there are many who possessed the intelligence to carry the dreams of Jules Verne. Sadly, we are just beginning to understand that responsibility. This, like all of the previous "Event" novels has been on par with the style and wit of Clive Cussler. It is encouraging to find another novelist who can carry on his legacy with the same style and grandiose vision. I look forward to future novels by Mr. Goleman... I'm certain that we will discover many new surprises in the realm of fiction. Be calm and carry on...0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
