Hopf takes us through another leap of adventure in this action packed story. Two brothers and their families, all separated throughout this book, struggle with the evil people that thrive on anarchy as they struggle valiantly to fight for decency, and come together again. Each group, each person goes through horror and blood just to survive. Society is breaking down after an EMP explodes in our atmosphere and brings America to a grinding halt. No power. No cars. No cell phones....we're back to the old west where the people with the most guns win.In this latest book, the United is breaking up into factions: the East Pacific States, driven by a rogue U.S. Marine navy commander whom has mutinyed and broken away from the rest of what's left of our nation's military trying to establish a safe place for his men, his intentions are good, but you just can't up and walk away with half the nation's military might and not suffer repercussions. In their new base on the west coast, the local mayor of the city (even though they are protected and supplied by the entrenched might of an army in their vicinity) considers him a traitor to the U.S. (which no longer exists) and the horrible conclusion of THIS conflict is shocking. Alaska has annexed. Hawaii has annexed. what remains of country is falling apart. Rioting, looting, are rampant. Only the communities that come together have a chance against the chaos. The United States president tries to hold the country together, and get aid to the common people after his predecessor planned to launch nuclear missiles at all suspected enemy's. He tries desperately to restore power, and get supplies out to those who need it. He has to divide his attention between the other nations on the globe that seem to be no better off than us, the Rogue Commander, and the militants moving upward from Mexico ruthlessly murdering and burning their way into the heart of our devastated country. A mercenary army. Bought and paid to attack the unstable U.S.A picture of who caused the world wide tragedy begins to form. The whole story is being told in retrospect by a survivor being interviewed in the not so distant future; A child. A little girl, during the time of all the terrible events of this book take place... The Author, Mr Hopf has left this hanging. This book ends well (no spoilers) but there remains a bit left to tell. What happens to the country after all the conflict of 2015? Somehow, the little girl (grown and with her own children now) must tell how her father and his brother stand up, and are instrumental in pulling the country back together.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Tying loose ends.By BrandonEQYBefore I start, I have read both of the previous novels, and this book IS fiction. The same way you know The Walking Dead and A Song of Ice and Fire are also fictional works. The author (Hopf), has a way of developing characters using the human condition. His characters are not intended to be perfect or sometimes even likeable. For example, Gordon is a very stubborn, sometimes brash and occasionally foul mouthed. Barone is stern, also stubborn, but attempting to change his way of thinking.Book 3 of the new world series works more as a "cutting loose ends and tying the other pieces together". Some moment were continuations of previous situations, some had been built up from also from the previous novels, while new struggles and characters helped change not only the landscape and story, but the actions of the characters. The novel has a good way, almost movie like, of getting to a cliff hanger, sometimes has you reading quicker through someone else's scenario just so you can get back to what was happening and completing the "jump from the cliff".Although there were a few minor typos, those could be overlooked by great storytelling and character development. I am eager for the release of the rest of the series. 5 Stars easily.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I could not put this book down!By AshI gave this book five stars because of the eloquence of the story line and the character development. As I read this book it was easy to relate to the obstacles the characters experienced. With so much of the story line taking place in familiar locations the view of the setting and backdrop in my minds eye made this one hard book to put down.I am not the quickest read, but this book kept me up well into the morning facing a very hard wake up call the next day. Even though I was tired, I would think back to how much I enjoyed the book the previous night. If you have enjoyed other books in this genre such as One Second After by William R. Forstchen you will love this series, and as the third book it was a page turner all the way to the very last word!
