(Library ebook) Shattered Trident: A Jerry Mitchell Novel

From BooklistJerry Mitchell, Bonds hero in three previous adventures, now commands his own sub, the USS North Dakota. While trailing a Chinese nuclear sub, Mitchell observes it torpedoing a Vietnamese ship. Soon Mitchell and his crew find themselves watching a war build up around them. Orders from high say they can only observe, and they cannot fire on another vessel, even if it means their own destruction. They can only hope the situation can be resolved diplomatically before the entire globe burns. Bond has plenty of military background, and his novels ooze authenticity, but readers expecting an action-packed novel along the lines of Vince Flynn will be disappointed. This one is more about realism and the nuances of military power than explosions and high-tech derring-do. Still, those who like their military thrillers grounded in the real world will be eager for another story featuring Mitchell and his crew. --Jeff Ayers This ripped-from-the-headlines taleshows once again his absolute mastery of the military action novel. I liked Bond's early work. And in all the time I've been reading- I've only thrown away one book. This was #2.There is no action in this book- just alot of political deals and talking. The 'action' sequences are maybe a few pages- then 10-25 more pages of tedious political talking. The characters are terrible. The author tries to make them likable, but fails.None of the tactical and strategic decisions make any sense.Plot points are thought up, articulated...and then forgotten. After getting bored, and reading ahead until the part about modifying torpedoes with nuclear warheads to blow up and prevent sound waves from traveling in the ocean...I gave up, and tossed it out.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An interesting take on a Pacific War between China and its neighbors but not USA.By Liam H DooleyThis book reaches a bit, but not too much. It is, as other reviewers note (and the summary), about a war between China versus a bunch of Pacific countries with the US desperately trying to impose peace while maintaining neutrality. It focuses on submarine warfare, which is fine - though sometimes this seems to really be Bond's primary theme, even when it isn't.The characters are ok - but in the modern world in this type of novel it is hard to have a "great" character amidst a large cast of characters which this novel has, as it tells the story from many perspectives; geographically and politically. What did I like? That I read about a war involving Vietnam while in Vietnam (during a trip here that I made). It is about something not entirely crazy - a poorly conceived war in the Pacific. It's not as if we are talking about Argentina versus Nepal. The tensions and issues in the Pacific are real. I enjoyed a pretty good balance between air, land, and sea battles - and of course if it involves the Pacific it has to have a lot of sea engagements. I would have preferred a bit more land combat, but oh well. What didn't I like? I know it was part of the plot, but the whole thing where US SSN's try to frustrate combat at sea is just crazy. These subs are too many people and too expensive to risk in this way. The Congressional hearings alone would practically bring down a Presidency. Benghazi? Having a US sub sunk while trying to stope two subs from fighting would make Benghazi look like a paperclip regulation hearing.Like Lash-Up, the novel ends a bit abruptly, and I'm not sure if the end is realistic. But I guess it had to end one way or another, and it was a creative ending. The technical, tactical, and political detail are generally good - again allowing for some literary freedom and artistic license.I hope I could write a book of similar quality.www.liamhdooley.com0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Awesome, Straight from Today's HeadlinesBy EborExcellent read. I love Japan, and I find it most irritating what the Chinese are doing to Japan and all other neighbouring countries at the moment. This story seems ripped from today's headlines. It paints a frighteningly real picture of what might happen tomorrow. Just look at what the Chinese are doing in the South China Sea, and you will have difficulties distinguishing current fact from the fiction in the book.I sincerely enjoyed the serenity that Bond and Carlson put in their Japanese main characters, it feels entirely authentic. The story is fast-paced, highly engaging and immersive.I sincerely hope that the scenario played out in this book will never materialise, but the Chinese seem hell-bound on making it happen. One of Bond's best. Every Chinese should be forced to read it under penalty of death, and every one else should read it too, just to understand that the biggest threat for mankind's future is the PRC.
