Impressive. The sturdy plot involves a suitably diabolical and grandiose scheme. An excellent mimic of Flemings prose, Horowitz delivers an entertainment sure to please James Bond fans. (Publishers Weekly (starred review))Great fun[for] readers who cant get enough of James Bond at his coolest and suave-est. (Seattle Times)Horowitzdelivers the tersely precise prose that makes Bond so compelling, but more than that, he also supplies touches of Flemings cruel poetry. A brisk and effective ride. (The Guardian)Horowitz has written a humdinger of a Bond story, so cunningly crafted and thrillingly paced that 007s creator would have been happy to have owned itfrom his brilliant first chapter on, Horowitz is a pitch-perfect mimic of the Fleming one-line punch. He even gets the clichs spot on. (Simon Schama, Financial Times)The heart of any good thriller is the plot, andHorowitz doesnt disappoint. The action moves with high velocity. Also stays true to the Bond of Flemings books. (New York Times Book )As Bond-villain plots go, this is a clever one. There are more than enough pleasures for even the strictest Bond aficionado in Trigger Mortis. The book barely puts a foot wrong... (Wall Street Journal)In Horowitzs expert and mischievous hands, Bond hasnt been scolded into becoming all things to all people. Instead, hes still Bond, James Bond, license to do what he damn well likes. Brilliant. Thank goodness Mr. Horowitz has delivered us a great new story. (Matthew Dunn, FoxNews.com)If Anthony Horowitzs byline werent on the cover, readers could bring themselves to believe that the new James Bond thriller actually came from the late Ian Flemings typewriter. Trigger Mortis fits seamlessly among the original Cold War-era gems. Bona fide Bond in every way. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)promises to be the best Fleming homage yet. (Publishers Weekly)A new James Bond novel shakes and stirs the notoriously anachronistic superspy. (Advocate.com)Its quickly apparent that Horowitz is doing something both clever and audacious.... Very much of its period.... A clever and enjoyable pastiche, which manages to press many of the buttons that were the purview of 007s creator.... There will surely be an appetite for more outings la Horowitz. I confess I was quite surprised to see many people thought this captured the true feel of Bond. I disagree. Mr. Horowitz is a decent writer and I feel the general plot was a good one, especially as it was set in the 50s, but - and this is, naturally, only my opinion - he absolutely did not capture the 'tone' of Bond. There was entirely too much waffling on Bond's part... Bond is a tough decisive and calculating man not prone to bouts of self-analyzing or overt introspection. He sees what needs to be done and does it.I'm pushing it a bit here, but there are moments immediately before Bond must tackle physical feats of action, when Mr. Horowitz's Bond is almost portrayed as thinking, "Crikey, I don't fancy this much." That is not Bond. One fine example is in 'Dr. No' when Bond has been put through a deadly obstacle course of No's invention. It tries to kill Bond in any number of horrid ways and Bond survives it, albeit the worse for wear, but he calculates his stock as follows (wildly paraphrasing here); "Cuts...burns...bruises... just superficial damage to the outer envelope... underneath everything is intact and ticking away strongly." You, as reader, had been on the edge of your seat wondering how the hell he would get through each stage of the gauntlet, but Bond's reaction on completion was basically a flat, "No big deal." And you realize, "... uh... yeah... that's right!"I wish Mr. Horowitz well and will consider reading a further book if he tackles Bond again. I just hope he gives Bond more grit.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Classic 007By PFCWell paced Bond story, partly using notes left by Ian Fleming. Set in 1957, it is a good period piece story with lots of action, formula 1 racing, an out of control New York subway train, a diabolical villain and a girl, so it has all the elements. Unlike others who have done Bond novels, Anthony Horowitz has taken the effort to write in Fleming's style. Horowitz is the man behind the excellent Foyle's War series and is a good writer. In his acknowledgements, he even thanks Nick Mason (drummer from Pink Floyd) who is a race car fanatic. Recommended.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Second Two Thirds are GoodBy Ambrose RankinCaptures a bit of the Ian Fleming Bond along with a bit of the film Bond. Clever plot well delivered. My only complaint is that the first third of the novel seemed a wasted excursion to a plot dead end. If I had to read it again, I would start at the castle soire. The afterword explains that the author was trying to work in some original Fleming material, but I thought it was a distraction from an otherwise good story.
