Good.By Joe DeSantisI disagree with some of the other reviewers who say that Silva's latest, The English Girl, does not match the previous Gabriel Allon installments. In fact, I believe this is his best book since Moscow Rules. Perhaps that is because the "new Russia" provides for such interesting villains. Some people complain that Silva's books are formulaic, but the formula is part of the appeal. He has created wonderful characters who you want to appear in the books. So you know Allon is going to get his team together, but that's great. You're looking forward to it. You know Eli Lavon is going to have Gabriel's back, making sure he doesn't have a tail. But that's great. You know Shamron is going to insert himself in an intrusive way, but that's great - you expect it from the curmudgeonly Sharmon.Despite the "formula", the book is still suspenseful. At no point in the novel did I feel like I knew what was going to come next.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Review of The English GirlBy GreenmanI have long been a big fan of the Gabriel Allon novels and somehow missed this one. I am glad I had a chance to read it. I have seen many of my favorite authors abandon a long standing series in the last year or two and although I do not blame them for wanting to go in a new direction, I am sad that some of the characters I have loved over the years are now gone, or at least asleep. I hope Mr Silva keeps Gabriel Allon alive for many years.I really liked this book, one of the best in the Gabriel Allon series, in my opinion. There was even a twist that I did not see coming until just before it was revealed. A good read.....1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Assassination without the violence: among Silva's bestBy Michael B. CongdonMeasured, Silva in this book satisfies without terrifying the reader. For that I'm thankful, as I'm getting too old to be terrified by anything fictional any more. Reality is bad enough. In this wide ranging, if a bit fantastical plot, our hero saves another Russian spy, after apparently killing her off in the first half of the book, when she wasn't a spy at all. A stretch? Yes, but Silva pulls it off without too outrageously violating the plot's believability. Almost up to LeCarre's standards, albeit with its clever dependence on the all-knowing Israeli Office. A good if not great read.
